Submission: from the "Dumpster Series"

Alan Frakes’ oil paintings, often done with the en plein air and alla prima methods, capture the sites where dumpsters sit in and around Tulsa, Oklahoma. His recently completely twenty-painting “Dumpster Series,” as exhibited at the Living Arts of Tulsa gallery in July 2007, shows the ever-present placeless environments of every city, as he challenges the convention of the traditional landscape. According to the artist, dumpsters are “an evocative subject through which to study the ways in which daylight falls upon large blocks of color in the same simple way that Monet painted and observed the way natural light fell on haystacks—not for the landscape subject matter but the study of color and light.”
